A lot of the advice on how to save energy in your home comes in the form of economising tips, making sure that the lights are turned off and that the curtains are drawn to prevent heat escaping out of the window. The fact that they take up space saves you money in installation time, and doesn’t interfere with the insulation in the roof as there’s no tank up there. It also means that the water that comes out of your taps comes at the pressure it does from the mains, so you should get better water pressure.

As for how they work, many are more economical because they use heat in a more efficient fashion. Condenser boilers, for example, use the heat that is expelled through the flue to generate more heat. All boilers have better insulation around the tank meaning that less heat is lost, and new techniques for heating the water means less energy just to get the water up to power.

Especially if you have a boiler that is more than ten years old, it’s worth thinking about a new one as the technology has come on astonishingly in that period, and an older boiler can be more expensive to maintain. For some types of heating technology there are grants available from the government that may help if you’d struggle to meet costs. Obviously, replacing your boiler is a big step, but it can lead to really outstanding savings.
