Carbon Forestry

How we work with you

Landowners

There are plenty of ways to benefit from new woodlands on your land. You might want to diversify into new enterprises, create long-term commercial woodlands, sports facilities, rides, windbreaks or open spaces, or perhaps link together existing woodlands and habitats.

Ten steps to new woodlands

There are ten simple steps to creating new woodland on your land:

Carbon Damage

The Times, June 14, 2007

  1. We help you establish your objectives
Once we've agreed your goals, we'll agree on the scope of work, confirming your intention to proceed with a Carbon Forestry woodland project.
  2. We assess the site and design a scheme to meet your objectives
We visit your site to assess the area, topography, soil type, local species suitability, nearby features, public rights of way, wayleaves, easements and other relevant factors. We'll then design a woodland or series of woodlands that suit you and the environment.
  3. We liaise with the Forestry Commission to make sure we comply with Environmental Impact Assessment regulations
Since September 1999, all woodland schemes over five hectares in non-sensitive areas and over two hectares in sensitive areas need consent from the Forestry Commission.
  4. We agree and sign contracts
Before implementation begins, we'll produce a simple contract to agree the terms and conditions of the project.
  5. Your order is logged
Your project will be added to our contracts order book and will be programmed into the next available planting season. Our bare-root planting season runs from November to the end of March each year.
  6. We find the best quality materials for you
We source the highest quality materials to ensure maximum reliability and environmental suitability. We use Tubex tree shelters that slowly disintegrate and are made from materials that are harmless to animals and plants. Our plants and trees come from British suppliers, and they're freshly lifted at the beginning of each project.

  7. We supply, plant and protect the trees
Except where otherwise specified, all materials and workmanship will be in accordance with appropriate current British Standards (e.g. BS 4428 General Landscape Operations, BS 3936 Nursery stock) and AFAG (Arboriculture & Forestry Advisory Group) guides.
All plants will be notch planted and firmed in, and Tubex Easywrap will be placed over the tree with bamboo cane to support it.
  8. We'll carry out any associated works
Our skilled contract labour force will complete associated works such as hedging, fencing, access, signage, wetland creation, road and path construction.
  9. The project will become part of our maintenance planning regime
A one-metre diameter area around each tree will be kept weed free for the 3-year maintenance period using approved herbicides such as Round-up Biactive (Glyphosate). Shelters will be maintained, losses assessed and replaced, and any other specific problems will be reported back to you.
  10. Your new woodland will be healthy and established
By year three, the trees will be able to compete with the weeds, so they'll continue to establish naturally by themselves.
